Commissioned by the MMK St. Stefan im Rosental (Kpm. Norbert Hirschmann). In the year the "Rosenwirt" inn (Sankt Stefan im Rosental A-8083) was founded, Europe was in the midst of one of the cruelest wars of all time. It was also the year of the death of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1830-1916). An excessive degree of thoughtless recklessness on the part of the decision-makers, which may have contributed significantly to the escalation of this war, is stylistically described by the admirable lightness that is characteristic of Strauss's works of "Viennese music". The force of the cruelty is intended to find a counterpart in the instrumental reference to the otherwise equally beloved "Verdi sounds", thus recalling the devastating battles on the border with Italy. A hymn sounds in the trio in a conciliatory manner. This represents a solemn promise cast in music and a call for eternal peace. May this musical call be a conscientious companion to all of us in the future and may peace remain with us. Just as our guest houses should continue to have their fixed place as a meeting place for all people and can thus play their part in this.
