As chance would have it, while working in his archive one day, Hans Stolz came across a copy of the first edition of the "20 Blumenlieder" ("20 Flower Songs"), published by Edition Scala, Vienna, in 1928. On closer inspection, he noticed a note on the cover: "Korrekturexemplar!" ("Correction copy!"). The handwriting was unmistakably that of Robert Stolz. It turned out that the composer had marked in this printed edition the printing errors he himself had discovered.
In 1972, the "20 Blumenlieder" were published by Edition Rex, Munich. In the Robert Stolz catalogue of works (Robert Stolz Werkverzeichnis, RSWV), its editor Stephan Pflicht notes the following: "For the new edition of the '20 Blumenlieder' published in 1972 (Edition Rex, Munich), the lyrics were revised or rewritten by Günter Loose, and the song cycle, whose music remained unchanged, was arranged in a new order."
"For the new edition of the '20 Blumenlieder' published in 1972 (Edition Rex, Munich), the lyrics were revised or rewritten by Günter Loose, and the song cycle, whose music remained unchanged, was arranged in a new order."
However, the corrections marked by Stolz were not incorporated into this edition, which is likewise out of print.
I am therefore delighted, with the kind permission of Clarissa Henry and in cooperation with the original publisher (Edition Rex Musikverlag), as well as with the generous support of Hans Stolz and Astoria Musikverlags GmbH, to present here the newly designed third edition of the "Zwanzig Blumenlieder" with the original lyrics by Bruno Wardt-Harden (exception: see note in Appendix 5). This edition incorporates the handwritten corrections and appears in a new layout. To create a historical link to the first edition, parts of its cover illustration, as well as its title page, its "motto" and the frame of its table of contents, are reproduced or used here with kind permission.
The edition is published by Musikverlag Andraschek as part of its initiative "150 Years of Robert Stolz | 1880–2030". „150 Jahre Robert Stolz | 1880–2030“.
