The Merry Widow – Highlights

Operette „Die lustige Witwe“ – Operette in drei Akten
Libretto: Victor Léon, Leo Stein | Musik: Franz Lehár
Zusammenstellung der Highlights von Akemi und Prof. Siegfried Andraschek

This edition is closely associated with the Wiener Operettenorchester, an ensemble consisting of a selection of outstanding musicians from renowned Austrian orchestras, including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Volksoper Orchestra, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (RSO Vienna), the Stage Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Wiener Operettenorchester has gained particular recognition for its own new arrangements. For more than three decades, the orchestra has successfully brought the charm of Viennese music to international concert stages with captivating potpourris featuring the finest melodies from the Golden and Silver Ages of Viennese operetta. One of these successful concert compilations has been adapted and arranged here for wind orchestra and consists of the following sections:

Introduction (Polonaise) (Act II) | Danilo’s Entrance Song (Act I) | Villa Song (Act II) | Kolo (Vivace from the Introduction – Act II) | Song of the Silly Horseman (Act II) | Waltz from Finale I (with short interlude) | Lips Are Silent (Act III) | Women’s March (Final Chorus, Act III). Note: This arrangement is intended for select/ad hoc orchestras; the use of professional singers is essential. In order to convey the distinctive character of Viennese music authentically and do justice to its musical tradition, it is recommended that the performance be led by conductors who are thoroughly familiar with its stylistic characteristics and performance practice. Selected passages are designed for a reduced orchestral lineup. Austrian-style flugelhorns and tenor horns (baritones) are expressly recommended.
