Fanfare sounds and the Archduke Johann Lied are decisive for this composition. It gets groovy in the end!
This work was commissioned by the Turnau Music Association – Kapellmeister Erwin Hofer – in 2018 to mark the 750th anniversary of Turnau. A key requirement was to incorporate the Archduke Johann Lied into the composition. Par force horns and a choir were also to be used at the premiere in Turnau (neither of which is obligatory for further performances). According to the occasion, the composition starts with fanfare sounds; as the composition progresses, the Archduke Johann song appears in different facets and in different guises. In the end, the song shines - how could it be otherwise - in a groovy, modern version; after all, Archduke Johann of Styria went down in history as the great modernizer. There were two suggestions for the title of the composition. “Das Tor zum Hochschwab” ultimately prevailed over the alternative title “Archduke Johnny”.
